I Like Big Buttons

February 18, 2015

bigbuttons_web2

I’ve freed another project from my needles! I love this one. It’s a neck warmer made out of yarn I bought in North Carolina when I went to visit my little brother before his second deployment. He just got home from his fourth deployment…so that should tell you something about how long I’ve had this yarn. bigbuttons_web3

I used a pattern for the textured ribbing. And I bought these big buttons from JoAnn Fabrics before we left PA.  bigbuttons_web1

We’re planning a trip back to PA in few weeks so I’m hoping to get the rest of my half-done knits complete. That way I can take them all back to PA and let my family and friends pick which ones they want to keep. Again – not much use for all of these in PA – so I want to make sure someone can enjoy them.  bigbuttons_web4

Purple Neck Warmer

February 17, 2015

neckwarmer2_web

I have so many half done knitting projects around that I’ve made a new rule for myself. I’m not allowed to start anything new until I finish what I have laying around. I’m also not allowed to buy any new yarn until I use what I have.  purpleneckwarmer1_web

This sounds extreme – but seriously – I have so much. I have balls of yarn I’ll never cast on unless I force myself to stop buying new. I’m calling this Operation Free The Needles.  purpleneckwarmer3

This was the first project that I freed. A chunky purple neck warmer that is thick and sturdy (it basically stands up on its own). I like the yarn a lot, but I think I prefer the double wrapped infinity scarves. This one pulls on like a turtle neck which makes my hair a little staticky.  purpleneckwarmer2 Happy Making!

Office Characters | Part Two

February 16, 2015

I liked my illustration so much from yesterday that I made another one today. I’ve got a whole list of terrible former coworkers to get through – so you might be seeing a few more of these. If we used to work together, you might see someone you know. I’m taking suggestions. 🙂 joannillustration_web joannsketch_web Happy Making!

Office Characters

February 15, 2015

We’ve all had horrible co-workers. Self-absorbed jerks who just seem to make your life hard for no real reason. I’ve left a job because a set of co-workers were just so bad, and so toxic, that I couldn’t stand showing up there 9 hours a day anymore. Now, I try to deal with people the best I can. Sometimes I end up turning these people into little characters that make me laugh (yes, I was the kid in middle school doodling their teachers as giant alien/squid monsters). This is one I found in my sketchbook today (which is why the original scan is so smudgy) that I turned into an illustration in Photoshop.

World Cup Chant Posters – Chile

February 14, 2015

Chile_WorldCup_Chant_Poster

I worked on my poster for Chile today. Their chant was so fun, and the country itself is shaped in a fun shape. Just like my USA poster, I tried to incorporate some handmade textures, my handwriting, and the country’s colors.

Sorry for the short post – but, it’s Valentine’s Day. So I’ve got places to be. 🙂

Chi Chi Chi, le le le, viva Chile!

World Cup Chant Posters

February 13, 2015

USA_WorldCup_Chant_Poster

I enrolled in a Skillshare class taught by James Victore. It’s called Radical Typography: What Do You Have to Say? and it focuses on letting your concept and individuality show through on your pieces – instead of conforming to design-y trends. I really like his personality and his thoughts on the design business (and I love watching his Youtube videos “Burning Questions” while I’m sitting in my cubicle working for the man). He walks through his process for how to make lettering and sketches and some of his finished pieces. This was the first exercise I did for that class.

When we went to Brazil for the World Cup last year I thought the chants everyone yelled were really fun. Each country had a few different ones and you’d hear them yelled out all of the time – no matter where you were. I wanted to do some posters that would remind us of our time at the World Cup and also some of the people we met there. We were rooting for the USA and Bosnia, but while we were there we really enjoyed the fans from Chile and Brazil. I planned on doing posters for each of these countries. I started with the USA.

A Portrait of Jasmin

February 12, 2015

Jasmin_drawing_web I’ve been working on this portrait of Jasmin for a while – but couldn’t get it quite right. The eyes were easy, but the nose and mouth gave me some problems. I think part of this is because teeth are so hard to get right, and I considered drawing him without the smile – but that was even harder to get right because he’s always smiling.  JasminDetail_web I’ve mentioned before how I’ve started keeping frames around the house. In some ways this is a real motivator to get things finished. I love being able to say something is done and immediately hang it on the wall. And because I’ve decided I want more of my own art around on the walls, I’ve started planning accordingly. I’ve also gotten smarter about drawing things to a particular size (that fits in a standard frame) instead of crushing my budget to get everything professionally framed. Sometimes, that just isn’t necessary.  jasmin_framed_web   Happy Making!

Little Green Hat

February 10, 2015

littlegreenhat_1_web

I’ve been focusing on my lettering and freelance projects for the last few days and haven’t really done a whole lot of knitting. Today, I made some time to just sit back and relax…and knit.

littlegreenhat2_web

I knit this while Jasmin and I watched a few documentaries from The History Channel. He also bought this awesome DVD about outer space and the universe, but since it requires 3d glasses it isn’t really something I can watch while knitting.

This project has been on my needles for so long that I can’t even remember where I got the pattern. I’m so glad it’s finally done.

Yes You Can | Illustration

February 9, 2015

I finished this illustration today. I kind of wish I had thought better about the sizing of it, because I’d love to throw it in a frame and hang it in my studio. But it was just one of those projects that came out of a doodle – so I didn’t put much though into it. Maybe I’ll readjust the sizing later. It turned out a little darker than I’d originally planned – but I think that’s a little indicative of my mood right now. Total exhaustion.
